National Energy Board approves Keystone XL Pipeline Project

CNW -- CALGARY, March 11 /CNW/ - The National Energy Board (NEB) today approved an application from TransCanada Keystone Pipeline GP Ltd. (TransCanada) to construct and operate the Keystone XL Pipeline Project, as well as the proposed tolls for the pipeline once it becomes operational.

The NEB found the proposed pipeline to be in the public interest and accepted that the project would connect a large, long term and strategic market for Western Canadian crude oil with the U.S. Gulf Coast in a manner that would bring economic and other benefits to Canadians.

The Canadian portion of the project involves the construction and operation of approximately 529 kilometres of new pipeline and related facilities.

Greenfog asked "How much land and how many people are going to be displaced by this thing? why don't they just ship it in tankers like everyone else?"

One reason they are not shipping it by tanker is that the Canadian portion of the project involves the construction of a pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta to the Canada/U.S. border at Monchy, Saskatchewan. This means they would need to build a pipeline twice as long over the mountains to get to the nearest sea port where it could be put on a tanker.

what canada is doing, bobdec and renagadegas, is licensing a 300 mile pipeline built through private enterprise without government subsidy to bring product for export from oilsands being developed for the past THIRTY years. the u.s. has no such resource worth development and has not since the 60's.
perhaps, new technology may warrant such development of new reserves 3 to 5 miles deep. that development is 10 to 20 years away. what do we do until then? --- drill, stupid, drill??

Why arent we doing this in the US? Oh yeah...we have a lame administration thats thinks of nothing but spending money on idiotic programs and ideas. God forbid they think of trying to make money, create industry and provide jobs to its people.

What's making misery for more people is a government policy that's killing the private sector and putting peole out of work.

What a huge waste of money that will only delay the inevitable and create more misery for many people.

I would much rather send billions of dollars to our neighbors in Canada, than to OPEC.

Since US gov. leaders are too stupid to drill more in the USA , it's a good thing Canada is bringing more petroleum to us. Because we will need it for the next 10-20 yrs it will be before green energy can significantly have an impact on our energy needs. Wake up people before it's too late.

There is a bridge to alternative fuels, so there will be a need for oil which is more important than spotted owls, etc.

We don't need pipelines for wind and solar. It appears someone is still admitting we are still going to need oil for a while. We might as well drill in ANWR and take advantage of the revenue.

If oil is being pumped in from Edmonton at the northern end. And more oil is being pumped in from Houston at the southern end. Where the heck does it all go?
